Johnny Sauter No. 21 ISM Connect Chevrolet Silverado Chicagoland Recap
In the final race of the regular season, Johnny Sauter, driver of the No. 21 ISM Connect Chevrolet Silverado, started from the fourth position for TheHouse.com 225 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway. Early in the event, he reported that his truck had no front grip as he maintained position within the top five. As the field was slowed by the third caution period of the night on lap 31, Sauter remained on track as several of his competitors pitted to line up in the second position for the restart with one lap remaining in stage one.
Sauter came to pit road at the stage break for four Goodyear tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment and returned to the track in 15th. He quickly worked his way back into the top 10, racing his way to a fourth-place stage two result.
As the race returned to green, the Necedah, Wis., native went back to work, entering the top three with less than 50 laps left in the race. The final caution of the night occurred on lap 107, bringing the No. 21 ISM Connect Chevrolet to pit road for four tires and fuel, with no adjustments. He restarted fifth and tookover the lead on lap 123.
Sauter stayed at the front of the field for the remaining 27 laps to secure his second win of 2018 and first in the NCWTS at Chicagoland Speedway.
The 39-year-old veteran joins teammate Kaz Grala in the 2018 NCWTS Playoffs to compete for his second NCWTS championship.
“This was a huge win for the No. 21 team. We really needed to pick up some momentum to start of The Playoffs and there was a feeling even yesterday as we ended practice that we could get that done tonight. I’ve been saying the last six or seven races how good this team is, how good GMS is, and the trucks that we build, and I think we were able to show that here tonight. All three trucks were up front and fast. We brought three new GMS chassis here tonight, so to put one in Victory Lane shows that this organization is still on the right track to go out and chase down another title.”
- Sauter is seeded second in the NCWTS Playoff Standings, 15 points behind Christopher Bell.
