Austin Wayne Self carries momentum North of the Border to Canada

Fresh off a top-10 finish in his ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards return this past weekend at Road America (Wisc.), sophomore NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) driver Austin Wayne Self (@austinwself) heads to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park looking for his second top-10 finish of the season in Sunday’s Canada 250.

To help prepare the Austin, Texas native for Sunday’s race, AM Racing through their development partner Win-Tron Racing put Self back in ARCA competition for the first time since February 2016.

Not missing a beat, Self practiced well, started outside the top-10 (based off practice speeds), but quickly raced into the top-10 and remained a factor throughout the 25-lap Road America 100. Self, in fact even recovered from being spun by another competitor in the final 10 laps of the race to earn a sixth-place finish.

Carrying the momentum for his first ARCA top-10 finish in nearly two years, Self is craving more as he heads back to Canada’s 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course.

“I’m excited to be back in Canada and get some more road racing experience under my belt,” said Self who returns to the AM Racing colors this weekend. “We had a really good run at Road America. If we had another lap or two, I feel like we would have been able to get a top-five, but we’ll take sixth and move ahead to this weekend’s race.

“I’m in a groove now where I’m just excited to turn left and right. Road America is a technical track and Canadian Tire offers some of that too. Canada is a fast track with some sweeping corners and even a little elevation change. It gives you the thrill and spill that you’re looking for. Hopefully, it’s a good race for our AM Racing team.”

It’s just not a big weekend for Self who has been traveling North of the Border as week as a tourist, but he’ll celebrate the marriage of his aunt Connie who is getting married at the track on Saturday to James Ohman.

“I gotta say it’s pretty neat to have members of my family at the race track this weekend to not only watch me race, but be involved in a family wedding too,” offered Self. “I’m happy for my aunt Connie and my uncle James. We have a big surprise for them this weekend and can’t wait to share.”

Still, with enjoying the blessings of laughter and love with the marriage of his family this weekend in Canada, Self admits that his heart is been breaking for his friends and family back home in Texas who are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Harvey who slammed into the state dropping record inches of rain which has cause massive and catastrophic flooding.

“Austin wasn’t a direct hit, but there were several cities around it that were hit with the unthinkable,” said Self. “I keep seeing all the pictures and videos of the destruction and it just hits you on a really emotional level. Texas is full of great people whose lives will forever be changed because of this event. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll do our best to show our support and offer assistance.”

To lead the way in standing strong with his home state, Self’s truck will carry “Texas Flood: We are One American Family!” a reminder that what we are witnessing in Texas is what being a true American is all about.  Americans across the United States have come to the rescue and aid of people they don’t even know to help make a difference.

Self hopes the signage on his truck will remind others to continue their selfless and thoughtful acts not only in the weeks, but months and potentially years to come.

In one prior start in Bowmanville, Self qualified 22nd and finished a respectable 15th.

In addition to AM Technical Solutions, Self will have additional marketing partnership support from Don’t mess with Texas, Accu-Tech, Snap-Track, AM Technical Solutions, Superior Essex and Legrand for his 10th race of the season and 32nd of his NCWTS career.
