Despite his Daytona result, Tyler Young a fan of new NASCAR race platform

While his Young’s Motorsports team night was ended practically before it started in this past Friday night’s NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, veteran driver Tyler Young was able to put that race in the rear-view mirror and look ahead.

After qualifying 23rd in his No. 02 Young’s Building Systems / Randco Industries Chevrolet Silverado, Young was about to initiate a plan to move to the back of the pack and ride when two trucks ahead of him made contact and sparked a massive 17-truck pileup including the truck driven by the Midland, Texas. Native.

While attempts were made to repair the truck, the team deemed the damage terminal sending them to the garage and with a disappointing 23rd place finish just 14 laps into the race.

Despite his rough night on Friday night, Young watched Saturday’s XFINITY Series race and Sunday’s Daytona 500 and embraced the new race platform which includes stages.

“I loved it,” said Young. “It’s disappointing what happened to us on Friday night, but that’s part of it. I really wanted to enjoy Daytona after everything that happened on Friday, so I embraced the XFINITY Series and Cup race and I loved what I saw.

“This new platform with stages encourages good hard racing and I like that. I was never bored. It just seemed like every lap there was something going on. The guys at the back were doing anything they could to get to the front and so on. It was just good stuff. I like what I saw and I think we’re heading in the right direction.”

Young knows that the new race platform will playout differently as the series’ visit different types of tracks, but he insists that’s part of the attraction now.

“It’s going to be different for sure this weekend at Atlanta,” Young noted. “You won’t be able to pit before the end of a stage and stay on the lead lap. It’s just not possible. So instead of finding yourself in a position to get good track position for the beginning of the next stage, you’re going to be racing hard and maybe even harder towards the end of the stage to see if you could get some points. We’ll find out this weekend at Atlanta.”
