Tyler young battles obstacles at Las Vegas

Tyler Young and his Young’s Motorsports team had a trying Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Penalized for making a track bar adjustment before the green flag, Young was forced to pit as the green flag dropped falling one lap off the pace and unfortunately battled handling woes throughout the DC Solar 350 that hampered the Midland, Texas native from making a comeback.

While turning solid lap times early in the race, Young would find himself threading the needle in lap traffic and despite his best effort was unable to keep the leaders at bay losing a second lap, while waiting for the caution clock to expire to bring out the first yellow flag of the night on Lap 38.

Reporting to his crew chief Andrew Abbott that his No. 02 Young’s Building Systems / Randco Chevrolet Silverado was loose. After pitting for tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment, Young returned to race in the 27th position.

Through the race’s second run, Young was able to pick off a few competitors, but still reported to his Young’s Motorsports team that his truck was a handful – and at times “wrecking loose.” Still, the Texan was able to slot into the top-25 approaching the halfway mark.

Just before the third and final caution waved for the expiration of the caution clock for the second time of the night, Abbott informed his driver that his lap times despite his handling woes were good enough to be inside the top-15.

With likely their pit stop of the night on deck, Young pitted on Lap 97 for tires, fuel, two rounds down on the track bar and a shock adjustment leaving pit road 24th overall.

Restarting the race with 47 laps to go, the 25-year-old was able to methodically pick off one more position to finish the event 23rd, four laps off the pace.

“Definitely not the night we wanted with our No. 02 Young’s Building Systems / Randco Chevrolet Silverado. We struggled with the handling of the truck throughout the weekend and while we made some strides during the day and especially during race – the penalty at the start of the race put us behind and unfortunately, we were never able to recover.

“I was surprised at the number of green flag laps we had at Las Vegas. I really thought the race would be more intense, but it was a pretty calm race with passing at a premium. The trucks were pretty equal and like many others, we battled the dreaded aero-tight while trying to make passes on the track.

“All we can do moving forward is build our notebook and plan to come back to Las Vegas next year and look for a better finish. I appreciate the work of Andrew (Abbott, crew chief) and the rest of the Young’s Motorsports crew. Finishes like this will make us a better team in the long haul.”
