Alon Day Takes Another Step Forward With NCWTS Debut
NASCAR Next driver and NASCAR Whelen Euro Series title contender Alon Day completed a solid a debut in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in the Unoh 175 on Saturday. In what was his first ever NASCAR start on a 1-mile oval, the Israeli brought the #71 FLwaterfront.com Chevrolet Silverado to the 24th position under the checkered flag at the end of cosistent, clean race.
“I feel good after my first oval experience in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Going there as a rookie, the goal was to learn as much as possible and stay out of trouble and we accomplished it,” said Day. “Contreras Motorsport did a great job making my oval debut as easy as possible and I am sure in the next races we will become better and better. I am so thankful for the opportunity FLwaterfront.com gave me, putting me behind the wheel of the #71 truck. We are still planning to race at Texas, but at the same time we are still working on sponsorship and I hope to be back to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series soon.”
With a track to learn and a truck to get to know, Day focused mainly on race pace in practice and ended up 26th and 27th in his first sessions at the Magic Mile at the wheel of the truck fielded by Contreras Motorsports.
After setting his fastest lap of the weekend in first ever qualifying run in a NCWTS truck and 27th, Day worked all race long on his pace, improving lap after lap and finishing a solid 24th under the checkered flag. The 24-year-old gained valuable experience in his first oval race overseas and looks forward to move to a bigger track in the near future to continue his learning process and be able to compete at Daytona International Speedway in 2017.
Day’s next race will be at Circuit Zolder, in Belgium, for the American Festival Circuit Zolder NASCAR Finals on October 8-9. The Tel Aviv resident is contending for the Euro NASCAR title at the wheel of the #54 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS and has to gain 29 points on championship leader Anthony Kumpen. With double points awarded in each of the two final races of the season, Day will have only one plan to clinch the NWES title: win both races as he did in 2015.
“All my efforts will go into this weekend, to be as prepared as I can for the last round of Whelen Euro Series and try to repeat our result from 2015. It will be 110% all weekend long!” said the Israeli.
The American Festival Circuit Zolder NASCAR Finals will be streamed live on Fanschoice.TV. Live updates from the track will also be available on the NASCAR Home Tracks Race Central Live page, the @EuroNASCAR twitter account and the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series Facebook page.
