Daniel Hemric Pocono 2016 Recap

A mid-race wreck marred Daniel Hemric’s (@DanielHemric) chances at victory, relegating him to a disappointing 22nd-place finish in his second-career race at Pocono (Long Pond, Pa.) Raceway.

Running as high as third early in the event, Hemric spun on lap 29 of 60 and made heavy contact with teammate Tyler Reddick, putting the Blue Gate Bank (In Organization) Ford F-150 team on damage control for the remainder of the event. Hemric remains third in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) driver point standings, 12 points behind second place.

Hemric lined up 14th for the start after qualifying was washed out by weather and the field was set per the NASCAR rule book. When the green flag waved on the Pocono Mountains 150, Hemric required only two laps to break into the top 10, running ninth when the first caution of the day waved on lap six. Reporting that his Blue Gate Bank Ford F-150 was a tick free on entry and snug on exit, crew chief Chad Kendrick advised his driver to remain on the racetrack during the first caution.

Restarting eighth, Hemric was still in the top 10 when the yellow flag was displayed again on lap 13. Opting to remain on the racetrack while others pitted, Hemric was scored in the fourth spot when green-flag racing resumed on lap 16.

He jumped up to third following the restart, but had dropped back to seventh by the time the fourth caution flag waved on lap 25. Hemric stated that his Ford F-150 lacked grip on the initial restart, and he was fighting a tight condition center and exit.

Kendrick called Hemric down pit road for four tires, fuel and both air-pressure and track-bar adjustments, and with several competitors remaining on the track under the yellow, the Kannapolis native lined up 11th for the restart on lap 28.

Unfortunately, shortly after the green flag waved, a wild restart put Hemric in a precarious spot in Turn 1, and his Blue Gate Bank machine got loose and spun. With teammate Tyler Reddick headed in his direction, the other Ford F-150 made hard contact, severely damaging both trucks.

The Brad Keselowski Racing team went to work quickly, never losing a lap as they repaired the No. 19 to the best of their ability over the course of several stops during the next three cautions. However, the damaged truck was no longer a threat for the win, and Hemric ultimately crossed the finish line in the 22nd position.
