Tyler Reddick Iowa Speedway 2016 Recap

A calculated gamble by crew chief Doug Randolph gave Tyler Reddick (@TylerReddick) a fifth-place finish in the Speediatrics 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race Saturday night at Iowa Speedway.  Reddick claimed his third top five of the season and his second consecutive at Iowa.  He also moved up to fifth-place in the series championship standings – the fifth-consecutive race he his has gained at least one points position – and is 37 points behind the leader.

The gutsy call by Randolph could have ended with a trip to Victory Lane for the Cooper Standard team in the 200-lap, 175 mile race.

Reddick started 15th and climbed up to 11th-place when the first caution slowed the race on lap 44.  Excellent pit work by the Cooper Standard team moved Reddick up to sixth in the running order when the race restarted on lap 53.

Reddick had his hands full with a loose handling Ford F-150 during the next green-flag run.  He was too loose to make up distance at the beginning of the run and was running ninth when the Caution Clock expired, bringing out the second caution on lap 104. Reddick pitted one lap later for four tires and adjustments.  Once again, speedy service by the Cooper Standard pit crew moved Reddick up to seventh-place when the race went green on lap 109.

Reddick settled into eighth-place on lap 110 and was running there when the third caution slowed the pace on lap 148.  Randolph made the call for right-side tires only on lap 150, while all seven trucks ahead of him chose a four-tire strategy – giving Reddick the lead.  When the race went green on lap 157, Reddick did his job on the restart, quickly clearing traffic and pulling away, building a three truck length edge as the laps ticked away under green.

The complexion of the race changed for Reddick and the Cooper Standard team when the fourth caution slowed the race on lap 179.  The yellow wiped out Reddick’s lead and gave his competition – armed with fresher tires – the advantage of restarting on his bumper.

The race went green on lap 188 and Reddick chose to restart in the outside lane.  Unfortunately, he was no match for those who took four tires.  Reddick went wheel-to-wheel with his rivals and was fifth in line when the fifth and final caution waved on lap 194, just six laps from the finish, setting up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag.  Reddick did a solid job on the restart and in the closing laps, holding firm to fifth-place.
