Smith Set for NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Debut

Casey Smith is set for his maiden voyage in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) this Saturday at Iowa Speedway.  The 30 year-old driver has made a name for himself in Super Late Model racing, including winning the Southern Super Series Championship a year ago, but is now focused on taking the next step in his career.  He will pilot the No. 07 Niece Equipment Company Chevy for Green Light Racing.

“I’m most excited about the opportunity to race in a premier NASCAR series,” said Smith.  “It’s been a dream of mine since I was five years old. I’ve raced with most of the other drivers in late models so I’m excited to get to race with them again.”

The biggest challenge for the Austin, Texas driver will be getting used to a heavier car.  While Smith is used to wheeling a 2,750-pound Super Late Model around the track, a Camping World Truck weighs more than 600 pounds more.

“I’ve never been in a race car that weighs as much as a truck, but they do have similar horsepower to a late model.  It will definitely take some time to adapt to that,” said Smith.

While this marks Smith’s first time behind the wheel in the NCWTS, it also marks the first time he has ever raced at Iowa Speedway.  The Rusty Wallace designed track, which is just ten years old, is the only 7/8-mile track in the world.

“Iowa looks like a real fun and racey place,” said Smith.  “It’s gotten pretty bumpy and it looks like you really have to be on top of the wheel as tires wear.”

The Green Light Racing No. 07 has competed in five of the seven 2016 NCWTS events and owns a season best finish of 11th at Daytona.  While Smith hopes to bring home the team’s first top-ten performance of the season, the biggest focus for him this weekend is to get laps and experience at the next level.

“My goal this weekend is to complete the entire race, learn a lot and get some experience for the upcoming races,” said Smith.
