Austin Hill Ready for First Career Start at Charlotte Motor Speedway

While NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) driver Austin Hill may not have any national touring career starts at the 1.5-mile oval of Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS), the 22-year-old does have experience in the track’s US Legend Cars Series and is excited to return to CMS for Friday’s NC Education Lottery 200.

Hill, who is the 2008 Legends Semi-Pro Summer Shootout Champion at Charlotte Motor Speedway, finished second in the Legends Big Money 100 in 2012 and has five wins on the quarter-mile track located on the CMS front stretch.

“Racing Bandolero and Legend Cars at Charlotte was always a lot of fun and I’m excited about returning there this weekend to compete in the Truck Series,” said Hill. “Having success there early on in my career has really helped propel me to where I am today.”

It will be full circle for Hill this week as he returns to make his first NASCAR start at a track he found success at early in his career. Hill has two NASCAR career starts on 1.5-mile tracks, both of which resulted in Top-20 finishes and included a 12th place finish at his home track of Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this season. The NASCAR Next alum is looking forward to using this week’s race to help build his team’s intermediate track program.

“For me the biggest learning curve about 1.5-mile tracks is the aerodynamics,” Hill said. “Learning how to work the air and move the truck around in traffic is something I will look to improve on at this race.”

Hill, who is both driver and owner in 2016, is driving for his family-owned team with a partial NCWTS schedule and has earned a Top-20 finish in both of his starts this season.

“During the break we were able to build another truck for the 1.5-mile races, and we’re going to be on top of our game at Charlotte,” said Hill. “Thursday’s practice session will be crucial for us. We’re bringing a brand new truck this weekend and I feel really good about it. I feel like it’s the best truck we have and I haven’t even driven it yet.”
