John Wes Townley scored his first career Camping World Truck Series pole on Friday at Kansas Speedway. Townley, making his 96th career Camping World Truck Series start, posted a time of 30.465 seconds in the final round of 12 drivers.
“Man! It’s really exciting!” Townley told SpeedwayDigest.com. “I knew it was gonna be tight on time just because everyone is running wide open here today. I can’t tell ya how nervous I was before and during that lap”
William Byron will take the green in the runner-up spot after positing his best career start on Friday at Kansas. Byron ended the final round in second looking 0.141 seconds behind the pole sitter when the session ended. His previous best qualifying effort came last season in his debut at Phoenix International Raceway.
Tyler Reddick, who drives the No. 29 Cooper Standard Ford, ended the two-round single-truck qualifying session in third. Reddick will take the green for the first time at Kansas inside the top 10.
Clint Bowyer, who won the last time he started in a truck race at Kansas, will start the race in 16th. Bowyer did not make round two after posting a 30.090 seconds, 173.689 mph.
Points leader John Hunter Nemechek will start the Toyota Tundra 250 in sixth. Nemechek leads the series standings by three points over Parker Kligerman. Kligerman will begin the 167-lap race in 18th.
Matt Crafton, who won the Toyota Tundra 250 last year at Kansas, will start in the 13th starting spot. Crafton goes into the night sitting 11th in points.
Mike Harmon and Norm Benning failed to make the race.
