Tyler Young secures track best top-15 finish at Phoenix

Qualifying 23rd for his return trip to Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway (PIR), NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) driver, Tyler Young was hoping to turn his weekend around with a solid run in Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150. Running as high as 12th, and as low as 32nd, Young was successful, scoring a track-best, 13th-place finish.

Following an unapproved adjustment before the start of the race, Young was relinquished to the rear of the 32-truck field for the start of the 150-lap event. The Texas native worked his way within the top-20 before the first round of pit stops began, under caution, on lap 40. Crew chief Bryan Berry brought the No. 02 Young’s Building Systems/Randco Industries machine down pit road for four tires, fuel, and a chassis adjustment to aid in a “slightly tight” Chevrolet Silverado. Restarting 19th, Young moved within the top-15 just past the halfway mark in the 21st annual event.

Unfortunately, the 25-year-old driver was forced to give up a lap to the leaders when a long green flag run ensued. Still battling a tight Chevrolet Silverado, Berry called the No. 02 machine down pit road at lap 105, under caution, for the final four tire stop of the night for fuel, and a chassis adjustment. Restarting 18th, with 41 laps remaining, Young was able to avoid a couple late-race cautions, as well as work his way through the field, to cross the finish line 13th, behind race winner, Timothy Peters.

“We qualified 23rd, which was disappointing to start the day out, but the truck just kept getting better and better throughout the race. Our night was going good until I came in for our last pit stop, and slid through the box. It was totally my fault. I was trying to get everything I could. It kind of got us behind, but the guys worked hard to get us back to the front. Tonight’s performance goes to show what this team is made of. Last year we were 25th here, now we’re 13th. I really think we could have been a top-10 truck; we just didn’t have the track position to back it up.”
