Ray Black Jr. Races His Way to a Top-15 Finish In Road Course Debut

Despite never having raced on anything other than an oval track, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) rookie driver Ray Black Jr. completed his road course debut at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park with a 15th place finish. The driver of the No. 07 ScubaLife.com Chevrolet, who constantly gained speed and confidence on the 10-turn track during the Chevrolet Silverado 250, continues to hold 11th place in the championship standings.

Prior to the drop of the green flag, Black worked on getting a feel for the road course and ran consistently faster lap times through the series’ two practices and qualifying sessions.

After lining up 23rd for the main event, Black began moving his way up through the field with ease, breaking into the Top-15 for the first time after Lap 30.

“The truck felt good for most of the race,” said Black. “The brakes were a challenge at first, but once I learned how to manage them my times were getting better and better. There was just a little bit of learning curve at the start.”

While the laps ran down and the action picked up on the track, Black managed to avoid any of the trouble taking place around him to finish 15th.  This finish marks his eighth Top-15 of the season.

“It feels really great to be back to finishing in the Top-15. The team worked hard all weekend long and gave me a good truck for my first road course race. Canada was great for us,” explained Black. “Road courses are challenging but a lot of fun. I had a great time out there and wouldn’t mind seeing maybe one more on the schedule. Maybe something like Road America!”

With the NCWTS trip to Canada complete, the series now takes two weeks off before heading to Chicagoland Speedway. Black will be spending this time relaxing and preparing for the final stretch of his rookie NCWTS season.

“I’m definitely going to take advantage of the off-weeks and have a little bit of fun!” said Black. “My friends and I are going to the Keys for a little bit to relax. Time to relax and regroup!”
