It was a hard-fought day for NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Ray Black Jr., as the rookie fought back from two spins to finish in the 26th position at Michigan International Speedway. The driver of the No. 07 ScubaLife.com Chevrolet maintains 11th in the championship standings, 25 points behind 10th place.
Black qualified 21st for the Careers for Veterans 200. Unfortunately, the air got taken off the nose of his truck, causing him to spin out and make contact with the outside wall and fellow driver, Mason Mingus, on the first lap of the race.
“I just got myself in a bad spot there. I got a little to close to the other trucks and it took the air off the nose and sent me spinning,” said Black. “I had it saved but then the 15 truck made contact and that caused some extra damage.”
After pitting for repairs, Black made his way back out on the track only to have a tire go down. His team immediately came together to get the No. 07 ScubaLife.com Chevrolet back to racing form.
“Unfortunately, a fender brace cut one of our tires down right away in Turn 1 once we got back out on the track,” Black explained. “But my team did a great job coming together and getting me back out on the track. We fought hard to be able to finish the race.”
Black would go on to finish the race in 26th place. Regardless of the rough race, he is already looking forward to returning to the track next year.
“Michigan is a great track – definitely a fun one,” said Black. “I’m looking forward to coming back here next year and building on my experience. Knowing the track a little bit better now, I know we can get a great finish there.”
Black and his team now set their sights on the upcoming Wednesday night race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Despite the quick turnaround, Black feels confident he will have time to recoup.
“I’ll relax for a little before the chaos of Bristol. I’ll probably spend some time with my dad and hang out at the beach for a little bit. It’s a small break but I’m ready for some short track racing.”
