Track best finish for Tyler Young at Martinsville

Making his third career start at Martinsville Speedway, Tyler Young showed patience around the half-mile “paper clip,” and scored his track-best finish at the Virginia short track. The Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender started the Kroger 200 on Saturday from the 24th position and ran as high as ninth, but crossed the stripe in the 19th position, his 13th top-20 finish of the 2014 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season.

Young showed strength around the .526-mile oval on Friday during the opening practice session, posting the 10th fastest time and backed that speed up for qualifying on Saturday. Looking for forward drive in the opening laps of the 200-lap event, Young stayed out of trouble in a race that was plagued by 11 caution flags for 71 laps and one red flag condition.

Crew chief Bryan Berry brought the No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado down pit road for a scheduled stop at lap 102 for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment, returning the Midland, Tex. native to the race track in the 23rd position, due to pit strategy by the race leaders.

Navigating his way through traffic, Young was able to work his way up to the 13th position, but lost ground on the leaders when he had to check-up for a six-truck pile-up in Turn 2 on lap 138. The Young’s Motorsports driver would protect the bottom groove, gaining positions on-track, until becoming a product of a Martinsville bump-and-run in the closing laps. Young would eventually cross the stripe in the 19th position behind race winner, Darrell Wallace, Jr.
