Accident Ends Hornaday’s Night Early at Charlotte

Ron Hornaday Jr. made his fourth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start of the season for Turner Scott Motorsports at Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS). The No. 30 Rheem Comfort Products team had two hours of practice on Friday morning, after rain canceled all track activity on Thursday. Hornaday made it to the third and final round of knockout qualifying, earning the fourth starting spot, his best since 2009 at CMS. Unfortunately, luck was not on Hornaday’s side Friday night at the 1.5-mile track. He was involved in two accidents, with the second of which ended his run on lap 114 of 134 and resulted in a 19th-place finish for the Rheem Comfort Products Chevrolet.

Hornaday took the green flag from the fourth starting spot as the sun was setting at CMS. By lap 11, the No. 30 Rheem machine was in the second position. Hornaday held second place until lap 74 when he was involved in an accident with another competitor. The No. 30 Rheem Chevy came down pit road for minor repairs to the left and right-side quarter panels. After restarting in the 20th position on lap 80, Hornaday consistently worked his way through the field. On lap 85, the fifth caution was displayed and Hornaday dipped down pit road for fuel, which would give him enough to go the distance of the race. After two more quick cautions, Hornaday was working his way through the field when he was involved in an accident on lap 114. He drove the heavily-damaged Rheem Comfort Products Chevy to the garage and ultimately finished 19th for Turner Scott Motorsports.

Ron Hornaday on Charlotte Motor Speedway:

“We had a great day in practice and qualifying in the Rheem Comfort Products Chevy. We started the race out great, and ran in second for the first portion of the race. We were involved in one accident and we were really going to recover nicely. Unfortunately, later in the race, I got loose and collected a couple of trucks. I ruined a great truck prepared by everyone at Turner Scott Motorsports; I feel really bad to send a truck back to the shop like that. I can’t thank Steve [Turner], Harry [Scott Jr.] and everyone at Rheem enough for giving me this opportunity.”

Hornaday is currently fifth in the NCWTS Driver Point Standings. The NCWTS returns to action in two weeks at Dover International Speedway. The Lucas Oil 200 airs at 5:30 p.m. EDT on May 30.
