Brett Moffitt passed race leader John Hunter Nemechek on the final lap to score his fourth career Camping World Truck Series win at Chicagoland Speedway on Friday. Moffitt, who had no idea if he would even race on Friday due to lack of funding, led the field for 17 of the 150 circuits.
After taking the white flag while heading into the first turn, Nemechek’s No. 8 Chevrolet ran out of fuel and slowed coming off turn two. That allowed Moffitt to take the lead away and sail to victory lane. After leading the most laps of any driver, Nemechek, son of former Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek, finished seventh on the leaderboard.
With three wins through 11 races this season, Moffitt, from Grimes, Iowa, posted his sixth top five and sixth top 10 finish of 2018.
Ben Rhodes will end the night with his best finish of the season through 11 races in 2018. The driver of the No. 41 Alpha Energy Solutions Ford will take home the runner-up spot at the 1.5-mile oval sitting 5.092 seconds behind the race winner.
Rhodes currently sits eighth in points along with four top five and six top 10 finishes with ThorSport Racing.
Johnny Sauter rounded out the top three finishers of the Overton’s 225. Sauter, holding four victories this season thus far, posted his 10th top five and top 10 finish and continues leading the series driver standings going into Kentucky Speedway.
Winner of stage two and pole sitter Noah Gragson finished fourth. Brandon Jones, driving the No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota, took home the fifth spot.
Stewart Friesen was one of the drivers to watch going into the weekend at Chicagoland Speedway. The driver from Canada ran upfront all throughout the night until tangling with Jordan Anderson on lap 120 in turn two. Friesen went on to finish 19th and two laps down at the end of the night. He also tangled with Dalton Sargeant on lap 59 in turn two. Anderson went on to finish 17th while Dalton Sargeant finished 20th.
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will take a weekend hiatus before returning to action at Kentucky Speedway. The Buckle Up in Your Truck 225 will take place on Thursday, July 12th at 7:30 p.m. ET. on FS1.
