This weekend, be sure to catch Jeff Gordon on Extreme Makeover: Michigan International Speedway Edition.

For the second consecutive week, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series visits a track that has been repaved during the offseason. Michigan International Speedway, site of Sunday's Quicken Loans 400, has always been one of Gordon's favorite race tracks. It remains so even after a facelift.

"I am not a big fan of repaves, so the fact that I am talking positive about it - and still enjoying the racetrack as much as I always have - is a sign that I think they did a great job," said Gordon, who participated in the Goodyear tire test here in April. "Whatever it is about this track, it has always had a great feel to it.

"And, instead of having to go in and 'recreate' [that feel] like some tracks have had to do, they were basically able to pave over the top of what they had - and fix whatever they could - to keep it lasting as long as possible."

 In 38 starts at the Irish Hills track, Gordon has two wins (1998 and 2001), five poles, 18 top-fives and 24 top-10's. But the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will need to find the groove(s) quickly on the newly paved track if he is to battle for victory.

"It's a very fast track but a very comfortable feeling pace," said Gordon, driver of the No. 24 DuPont "20 Years" Chevrolet. "The cars drove well and they stuck to the race track.

"The track drives so similar to the way it did before and I believe it's going to have multiple grooves. We just need it to widen out a little bit, and that is only going to come with laps."

Earlier this year at Auto Club Speedway, Gordon drove from his 21st starting position to inside the top five without the aid of a caution before pit road penalties ruined that effort. But the similarities of Auto Club Speedway to its "sister" track Michigan International Speedway are only in appearance now.

"They are both two-mile tracks, but there are not a lot of similarities now between the two," said Gordon. "I don't think because you ran well at California translates to running well here.

"But I am really looking forward to the race this weekend because we tested here and it went well, and because we've had strong performances recently.

"Now we just need a strong finish."


The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series was forced to cancel qualifying due to rain and based on owner points that slated Crafton to start the race in 10th. Matt Crafton and the No. 88 Menards/Goof Off Toyota Tundra stayed in the top ten for most of the race. A late caution and restart gave Matt the jump that he needed to lead the race. After a battle with his teammate, Johnny Sauter, Crafton had to fall back one spot because of loose handling. He was able to hold off the third place competitor for the remainder of the race and finished in second.

This is Matt's 12th top-10 finish in 23 races at Texas Motor Speedway and his third top-10 finish in 2012. Crafton is currently 7th in the NCWTS Points Standings, up two spots from Dover.

"What a race for the Menards/Goof Off Toyota Tundra and ThorSport Racing," said Crafton. "This is definitely a finish that we needed to get us headed in the right direction and moving up in the points standings. I cannot thank Duke and Rhonda Thorson enough for providing a great team and outstanding equipment. I am looking forward to heading to Kentucky in a few weeks to continue with this positive momentum."

John Wes Townley and his RAB Racing team headed to Texas Motor Speedway with a proven ToyotaCare Toyota Tundra and high hopes of a solid finish. Townley demonstrated in Friday evening's lone practice session that he had a Tundra capable of contending for a top-10 finish. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be for the 22-year-old driver, as he was involved in an early accident and sustained heavy damage. However, the RAB Racing team demonstrated a never-quit attitude that allowed the Watkinsville, Ga., native to continue his streak of running at the finish of each NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race that he has competed in this season.

As the race got underway under the lights at Texas Motor Speedway, Townley made contact with the outside retaining wall on the front stretch. The following lap, Townley brought the ToyotaCare Tundra to the attention of his RAB Racing crew, where it appeared that the damage sustained would be terminal. However, the crew immediately put together a game plan to make repairs that would allow Townley to return to the track prior to the midway point of the event. Townley logged laps for the remainder of the event, taking the checkered flag in the 27th position.

"We had a good ToyotaCare Toyota Tundra," said Townley. "Unfortunately, the truck just got away from me and I couldn't get out of the gas fast enough to save it. Our team did a great job all weekend. It was important to us to get back out there, complete as many laps as possible and be running at the finish. I know we probably took a hit in the points, but we'll rebound at Kentucky in a few weeks."

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will take two weeks off before heading to Kentucky Speedway Thursday, June 28th for race seven of the 22-race schedule.

On Tuesday, June 12th, Roush Fenway Racing’s Matt Kenseth is set to square off in the ASA Midwest Tour Swiss Colony Howie Lettow Memorial 150 at the Milwaukee Mile.  Kenseth, who earned his second DAYTONA 500 victory earlier this season, will also face-off against his son, Ross.  Tuesday’s race will mark the third time that the Kenseth father-son pair has raced against each other; the last time the two competed against each other was the 2010 Slinger Nationals event. 

The Kenseth family is in its third generation of racers who all started racing in Wisconsin.  Matt began his racing career at the age of 16 and started out in the Wisconsin late model ranks before he took the NASCAR world by storm earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2000, a Cup Championship in 2003 and earning two DAYTONA 500 Championships in 2009 and 2012.  Ross has followed in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps showcasing his talent behind the wheel as well as he looks to hone his racing skills while also attending Clemson University.  Ross earned nine wins in 2011 and has already claimed a victory in 2012 when he won the Orange Blossom Special at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, N.C. back in April.

“I think it's going to be the biggest short track race in years up in Wisconsin,” said Matt.  “It will be a pretty cool race and a really big event.  I’m excited to go race in the event this year, but it really all came together after we had an extra car in the shop, and I just decided that it would be fun to set it up and race it a few times this summer.”

When asked about how it will be to race against his son again, Matt said, “Of course I want him to do well and I always hope that he’ll out race me, but I don’t race him any differently than anyone else.  Ross has been doing well with his racing career.  He had a lot going on catching up from this winter and us moving our shop down to North Carolina, but he’s been working hard and has already won a race this year.”

As of June 7, there were 80 entries for The Swiss Colony Howie Lettow Memorial 150 listed on the ASA Midwest Tour’s website.  The Swiss Colony Howie Lettow Memorial 150 will feature the cars and stars of the ASA Midwest Tour along with several special guests including the Kenseths as well as 1989 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Rusty Wallace, David Stremme, Tony Raines, David Ragan, and several others.

Cale Gale raced the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet Silverado to an eighth-place finish on Friday night at Texas Motor Speedway.  With a fast truck, flawless pit stops and strong restarts, the team was able to pick up their second top-10 finish of the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season. 


When rain showers wreaked havoc on the weekend's schedule, NCWTS qualifying was cancelled and the field was set by owner points.  Gale lined up 16th for the 167-lap WinStar World Casino 400 and immediately began picking up positions to race in 11th-place by lap 10.  A couple of early cautions gave Gale the opportunity to work with crew chief Jerry Baxter and the Rheem team to continually improve the handling of his Rheem Chevrolet Silverado.  Knowing the characteristics of the race, Baxter worked variance into the setup on the Rheem Chevrolet to allow the team to tighten up the truck as the sun set and the track loosened up.  Gale brought the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet down pit road during the lap 33 caution and again during the lap 74 caution for a series of chassis and air pressure adjustments.  With a very strong truck, Gale continued to hold his track position just outside the top 10 throughout the opening 110 laps. 


With solid pit stops the Rheem team was able to pick up several positions on pit road, and Gale continually made up additional ground on restarts.  Throughout the night Gale worked closely with substitute spotter Jay Shew to realize where competitors were making ground on him, and where he was able to pull away from other drivers.  As the handling on Gale's truck changed with tire wear, Shew also suggested different lines around the track to help the Rheem Chevrolet turn through the corners. 


With less than 40 laps to go, Gale drove his Silverado down pit road for the final stop of the night.  The Rheem team laid down a fast stop to pick up two additional spots for Gale on pit road moving him into the eighth position.  The race restarted one last time on lap 144, and Gale immediately drove up two additional positions to be scored in a race-high position of sixth-place. With his tires wearing off the driver settled back into the eighth position where he led his Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR) teammate Justin Lofton to the checkered flag, and recorded his second top-10 result of the season.  With the finish, Gale also picked up four spots in the 2012 NCWTS owner standings to be scored in the 12th position, just 17 points outside the top 10.  


"I'm really proud of the performance of the Rheem team tonight at Texas Motor Speedway," commented Gale following the WinStar World Casino 400.  "We raced competitively all night long, got better with each pit stop, and brought home a finish that we deserved.  We had another phenomenal Rheem Chevrolet Silverado from Eddie Sharp Racing-I can't thank Jerry Baxter and all the guys enough for all their hard work this season.  It means a lot to have the support of Rheem and everyone at Eddie Sharp Racing, and it's always a good feeling when we're able to run strong and bring home a good finish."


Race Highlights:       

  • Richard Childress Racing teammates finished ninth (Paul Menard), 14th (Kevin Harvick) and 15th (Jeff Burton).
  • According to NASCAR Loop Data Statistics, Menard maintained the fifth-best average running position of 7.894, spending 159 out of 160 laps (99.4 percent) in the top 15.
  • Menard ranked eighth in the Loop Data category Driver Rating with a 100.3, and was fifth-fastest on restarts with an average speed of 158.459 mph.
  • Harvick ranked fourth in the Closers category, improving four positions in the last 10 percent (16 laps) of the race.
  • Harvick made 90 green-flag passes, the sixth-most of any driver according to NASCAR's Loop Data statistics.  
  • Burton spent 98 laps running in the top 15, tenth-most in the 43-car field.
  • Burton made 76 green-flag passes during the 160-lap event, 37 while running in the top 15.
  • Joey Logano won the Pocono 400 presented by #NASCAR, and was followed to the checkered flag by Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin.  
  • The next NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is the Quicken Loans 400 on Sunday, June 17, televised live on TNT and broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio beginning at 12 p.m. Eastern Time.

Paul Menard and the No. 27 Sylvania/Menards Team Earn Ninth-Place Finish at Pocono Raceway


Paul Menard took the green flag in the third position and drove the Sylvania/Menards Chevrolet to a ninth-place finish in the Pocono 400 presented by #NASCAR, marking his best career result at Pocono Raceway. The Eau Claire, Wis., native competed in the top 10 for the first half of the 160-lap event at the 2.5-mile triangular-shaped speedway, reporting that a tight-handling condition had developed as the run progressed. Crew chief Slugger Labbe instructed the Sylvania/Menards crew to make slight air pressure changes and a track bar adjustment during routine green-flag and caution period pit stops. Pit strategy played a large part in the 400-mile affair, and the Labbe-led team closely monitored fuel mileage. As the tight-handling condition persisted in the center of the turns, Menard fell back to the 12th position on lap xx. He quickly climbed back into the top 10 and late-race cautions on laps 136 and 148 offered relief to the threat of the No. 27 Chevrolet running out of fuel. Able to drive at full speed, Menard advanced to the ninth position where he took the checkered flag, earning his best finish at the Long Pond, Pa.-based facility. With the top-10 finish, Menard gained two positions and now sits 13th in the Sprint Cup Series driver championship point standings, 27 points out of the final Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup spot.

"The Sylvania/Menards team was on top of it today, making adjustments on the car and turning fast pit stops. The car fired off pretty good and then would get tight in the center of the turns as the run progressed. With each pit stop, it got better and better. The team did a great job getting the car set up for qualifying and it paid off. Starting up front was the key; track position is so important here. We learned a lot today and during the test, and I want to thank the guys for all of their hard work this week."

Kevin Harvick and the Rheem Team Finish 14th at Pocono Raceway


Kevin Harvick and Richard Childress Racing's No. 29 Rheem team finished 14th at Pocono Raceway Sunday afternoon after overcoming a pit road penalty and battling a tight-handling condition. Harvick started the 160-lap affair from the 21st position and soon alerted his crew the Rheem Chevrolet's handling was too tight. Harvick maintained a position within the top 15 until lap 42 when he was issued a penalty by NASCAR officials during a scheduled green-flag pit stop, for speeding on the exit of pit road. Per NASCAR rules, the RCR driver brought the Rheem Chevrolet back onto pit road for a "pass through" penalty, dropping the No. 29 Chevrolet back to the 26th position. Back on track, the Bakersfield, Calif., native began to work his way toward the front of the field, settling into the top 10 by lap 84. As the race continued, Harvick informed the crew the Rheem Chevrolet was still tight in all areas of the 2.5-mile triangle-shaped track. Throughout the course of several scheduled pit stops, the Shane Wilson-led team worked to alleviate the challenging handling condition the car developed. As the laps wound down, Harvick continued to the battle handling issues but was able to maintain a position within the top 15, crossing the finish line 14th. Harvick improved one position, to sixth, in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver championship point standings, 53 markers out of the lead, after the event at the Long Pond, Pa.-based facility.

"This was not the finish I was hoping for today. The Rheem crew worked hard all day, we just couldn't catch a break all week at Pocono Raceway. We may not have done as well as we would have liked, but we need to move forward and begin to focus on next week's race at Michigan (International Speedway)."





Burton Survives Back-to-Back Penalties and Scores Top-15 Finish at Pocono Raceway


Jeff Burton and the No. 31 Armed Forces Foundation Chevrolet team survived two penalties and brought home a top-15 finish in the Pocono 400 presented by #NASCAR at Pocono Raceway. After qualifying the red, white and blue No. 31 Chevrolet in the 20th position for the 400-mile affair, the South Boston, Va., native quickly climbed into the top 15 by lap 30 and eventually cracked the top 10 by lap 50. The third caution flag of the event was displayed on lap 67 and the 44-year-old veteran driver brought his Richard Childress Racing machine down pit road for four fresh Goodyear tires and Sunoco Green E15 fuel. Upon completion of the routine pit stop, NASCAR officials forced Burton to the tail end of the field, as the Richard Childress Racing veteran was clocked for speeding upon exit of pit road, receiving one of 22 pit road speeding penalties throughout the 160-lap event. Burton reluctantly dropped back to the tail end of the field to serve the penalty as the green flag waved for the ensuing restart on lap 72. However, according to NASCAR officials, Burton was supposed to restart behind the "wave around" cars that stayed out under that specific caution-flag period, even though they didn't catch up to the rest of the field prior to the restart. Another penalty was assessed to the No. 31 team, much to the chagrin of the 21-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race winner. After serving the "pass through" pit road penalty, the Armed Forces Foundation team received a lucky break as the caution flag was displayed for debris, keeping them on the lead lap in the 18th position. A confused and frustrated Burton regained his composure and climbed his way back into the top 15 10 laps later. Fighting a tight-handling condition on the No. 31 Chevrolet, the RCR driver survived several exciting restarts on the newly resurfaced 2.5-mile triangular-shaped track and managed to maintain position for the remainder of the event, finishing in the 15th position. Burton remains 18th in Sprint Cup Series driver championship point standings.

"This team is a resilient bunch. We fought back from two costly penalties and managed a top-15 finish. I'll be interested to talk to the NASCAR officials about the penalties. Obviously, something went wrong there. We definitely had speed in the car at times and are improving every week. It was also great to show off the colors of the Armed Forces Foundation and meet some of our troops at the track. I am very proud to be affiliated with such a great organization."


NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie driver Ross Chastain had high hopes for Friday evenings Windstar World Casino 400k at the Texas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately Mother Nature had other ideas cutting short Thursday’s practice sessions and canceling qualifying. With the reduced amount of track time, the SS Green Light Racing team was unable to find the speed that the Florida teen was looking for on the fast mile and a half track.

Ross started the Melon 1/ Toyota Tundra in twenty-third place based on 2012 owner’s points since qualifying was rained out and spent his entire evening trying to work his way to the front of the field but his drive toward the top-ten was slowed by seven caution periods.

Through the 167-lap race Ross ran between the thirteenth and eighteenth positions as he struggled with the handling of his Toyota mount. Following each caution, Chastain would fall back several positions as he waited for the tire pressure to build and for the handling of the Melon 1/ No. 08 to improve.

"I tried everything on restarts; I tried the bottom, the top, the middle. I tried everything," Ross explained. "It was just so free, so loose going in I just couldn’t do anything. I would go into the corner and I had to lift more than I wanted to. But then after fifteen laps I could run almost wide-open."

Each restart was more of the same, losing a few spots on each restart and then slowly working his way back toward the top-fifteen left the rookie driver searching for answers. “I felt like we did everything we could at the track to try to make it better. As far as the long runs, we did the best we could with what we had. We’ll have to see what we can do better at the shop.”

“That last pit-stop our pit crew picked-up a couple spots and we got up there with guys I was just as fast before the caution and I was just as fast afterwards. But after the restart they would get their distance on me and then we would level out and I could start to make some spots.”

“I wish that last caution had not come out because we had passed some trucks that ended up finishing way in front of us. We would have been a lot better off without that caution though. I guess its just part of the truck series.

Chastain crossed the finish line on the lead lap in sixteenth as Johnny Sauter won his first race of 2012. "We really didn’t have the speed all weekend," Chastain said. “We were like sixteenth in practice and that’s right were we ended-up.”

“We’ve got a couple weeks before Kentucky, we’ll sit down on Monday and decide which truck we are going to take there. Then we’ll work on it hard because we are definitely looking for a better run.

Chastain picked-up five positions to eighteenth in the NCWTS point standings as the Truck Series takes a two-week break before a rare Thursday night race at the Kentucky Motor Speedway.

After unveiling the 2013 NASCAR Fusion at Charlotte Motor Speedway in January and highlighting the first version of its new car in a team paint scheme on Memorial Day weekend, Ford Racing is using the upcoming race weekend in Michigan to unveil updates to the design of the Cup car which shows even more brand identity through enhanced design cues, including new grille work and hood lines.

Gone is the stickered front grille from the January reveal and in its place are actual grille bars which will adorn the 2013 Cup Fusion, in addition to several other key tweaks to the front end of the car.

“We had an opportunity to add more personality and detail to the race car,” said Garen Nicoghosian, Ford design manager in charge of the NASCAR project.

“We took advantage of this opportunity and sculpted a more aggressive front end and we added grille bars that are identical in design to the production car. We also added more detail to the fog light housings, and created a more detailed headlight area as well.

“In addition, we also sculpted a more aggressive hood, and were able to achieve a closer look to the production car. Our race car is even closer in design to the production car now, and we are very pleased with the results.”

The latest enhancements have allowed Ford to more closely match the production Fusion while remaining within NASCAR guidelines as the manufacturers inch closer to submitting their final designs to NASCAR for the 2013 season.

“Both the race and production Fusions speak the same design language,” Nicoghosian continued.

Greg Biffle is off to a memorable start in this 2012 season.

First, he occupies the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points lead for 11 consecutive weeks. And now, he takes down five-time champion Jimmie Johnson in Round 1 of the NASCAR The Game: Inside Line “Drive for the Cover” Facebook campaign by a scant one percent margin of victory.

Round 1 of the tournament saw several very close matchups, leading to some fascinating pairings in Round 2, which begins today.

Marcos Ambrose led all drivers in total voting as he advances to Round 2 to face Denny Hamlin, who edged out past series champion Bobby Labonte. Below are the head-to-head matchups for Round 2, which includes a rematch of last year’s exciting championship battle between Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart:

Voting for Round 2 of the “Drive for the Cover” campaign begins todaywith five weeks remaining in the campaign to select the driver who will adorn the cover of NASCAR The Game: Inside Line. Here is the voting schedule, which culminates in July:

JUNE 10 – First Round Closes (16 drivers)
JUNE 17 – Second Round Closes (8 drivers)
JUNE 24 – Third Round Closes (4 drivers)
