A new era will dawn at the 2023 Rolex 24 At Daytona, when new Le Mans Daytona h (LMDh) prototypes will make their worldwide competition debut.
 
Through a historic convergence with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) announced last summer, Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) prototypes from mainstream automotive manufacturers also will be eligible to compete head-to-head with LMDh cars for overall victories in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. And with that new machinery comes a new name for the top class: Grand Touring Prototype (GTP).

The GTP name hearkens back to a previous “Golden Era” of IMSA prototype competition. From 1981 to 1993, IMSA GTP featured innovative prototypes from a variety of manufacturers. The original GTP era helped to develop what then were emerging technologies such as antilock braking (ABS) and traction control among others, while also placing an emphasis on limiting fuel consumption.
 
The new GTP class will place a renewed emphasis on fuel economy, sustainability and green initiatives, such as the single-specification hybrid powertrain system to be used by all LMDh cars along with other technologies relevant to participating manufacturers. The GTP moniker also is appropriate given that each car will carry significant design cues and styling to closely align with each manufacturer’s road-going products.
 
“If you were a race fan in the 1980s and early ‘90s as I was, you probably have fond memories of those epic IMSA GTP race cars, drivers and teams,” said IMSA President John Doonan. “We are on the precipice of an amazing new era of GTP competition, with a real opportunity to eclipse the previous success of GTP. There is so much for IMSA fans – and really endurance sports car racing fans around the world – to look forward to in the coming years, led by the introduction of the new GTP class here at Daytona in 2023.”
 
In addition to unveiling the new name, IMSA also unveiled a new GTP logo as part of a news conference this evening at Daytona International Speedway. The logo – which will be displayed on all GTP cars beginning next season – is a modernized take on the previous generation IMSA GTP logo.
 
Several manufacturers already have confirmed participation in the GTP class beginning next season with new LMDh prototypes. Additional manufacturers with LMDh and LMH race cars are believed to be in the pipeline as well.
 
Porsche recently became the first LMDh manufacturer to publicly unveil its new GTP race car, with others slated to roll out throughout the year.
 
The 2022 WeatherTech Championship gets under way this weekend with the 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona. Live NBC network television coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. ET this Saturday, Jan. 29.

With this weekend’s 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona serving as an appropriate backdrop, the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) and Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) announced this evening an arrangement bringing HSR’s popular events and iconic, vintage and historic sports cars from throughout more than 50 years of IMSA and beyond into the IMSA portfolio.
 
The annual HSR calendar features numerous successful events at a variety of IMSA/NASCAR properties, including Daytona International Speedway, Sebring International Raceway and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. HSR’s trio of blockbuster events includes the “HSR Classics” at Daytona and Sebring and The HSR Mitty at Michelin Raceway, which celebrates its 44th running this year as one of the oldest vintage and historic races in the United States.
 
The 2022 HSR season opens with the annual Spring Fling at Sebring on April 6-8. A nine-event calendar includes repeat visits to Sebring and Michelin Raceway, as well as events at Barber Motorsports Park, Road America and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, where HSR debuted in 2021 as the sanctioning body for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
 
 
“IMSA’s future is extremely bright, with many new and innovative platforms debuting over the next several years,” said IMSA President John Doonan. “Bringing HSR into the IMSA family substantially strengthens the links to previous generations of sports car racing, from eras that predate IMSA all the way through to cars that have competed in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.”
 
HSR’s roots can be traced to a group of Jaguar enthusiasts from Atlanta in the mid-1970s, who organized what became “The Mitty” for the first time in 1977. HSR’s first event as a sanctioning body was held at Sebring in 1991, and since that time, HSR has organized and sanctioned more than 250 events in the United States and Canada.
 
“When IMSA first approached me about their interest in being involved in the vintage and historic racing scene, I knew this could be the perfect opportunity for both HSR and IMSA,” said HSR President David Hinton, who became a co-owner of HSR in 2012 and will remain with the organization as part of the new HSR entity. “John Doonan’s enthusiasm and love for our sport is unquestionable, and I look forward to working with him and the entire IMSA team as we continue to grow the HSR brand and footprint.”
 
HSR becomes the eighth racing series to be sanctioned by IMSA. It joins the flagship WeatherTech Championship, as well as IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, IMSA Prototype Challenge and four single-make series: Ferrari Challenge North America, Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires, Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America and Porsche Carrera Cup North America. IMSA also is active in eSports as sanctioning body for the IMSA iRacing Pro Series.

“Heaven’s little light” will shine down on Auto Club Speedway prior to the WISE Power 400 on Feb. 27.  

Auto Club Speedway announced today that Collective Soul will perform a 60-minute concert in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Fan Zone. The iconic band’s performance will rev fans up for the NASCAR Cup Series race and be the musical highlight of the track’s 25th anniversary celebration, a sonic bridge to the track’s 1990s roots.

“What’s great about Collective Soul is that, like Auto Club Speedway, they’re just as relevant today as they were back in the 1990s,” said Auto Club Speedway President Dave Allen. “That staying power is a testament to their unwavering dedication to their fans and the commitment to their craft.”    

Collective Soul burst onto the scene in 1993 with the landmark debut Hints Allegations & Things Left Unsaid in 1993. From there, they haven’t taken their foot off accelerator, producing music that’s seared itself into the souls of millions, including unforgettable hits like “Shine,” “December,” and “The World I Know.”

Moreover, the Georgia band refuses to rest on its laurels. They continue to produce new music and perform dynamic shows, with the 2019 album Blood launching the band on a fresh musical trajectory. And now E Roland (vocals / guitar), Dean Roland (rhythm guitar), Jesse Triplett (lead guitar / background vocals), Will Turpin (bass / background vocals) and Johnny Rabb (drums / background vocals) are ready to make their first live Southern California appearance in nearly three years.

The 2022 WISE Power 400 caps two great days of NASCAR racing on the high-speed, 2-mile oval at Auto Club Speedway. Racing begins Saturday, Feb. 26 with the Production Alliance Group 300, the second race of the NASCAR Xfinity Series season. And then on Sunday, Feb. 27, the WISE Power 400 will thrill fans with Auto Club Speedway’s first NASCAR Cup Series race since Alex Bowman took the checkered flag on March 1, 2020.

New for the 2022 season, Stafford Speedway will welcome Riley Generators of East Windsor, CT as the newest member of its contingency program.  Riley Generators will provide the Limited Late Model feature winner with a $125 bonus during the 2022 season.

“I’ve been involved in racing for a long time and I’ve always wanted to do this,” said Dan Riley, Jr., owner of Riley Generators.  “I talked with Stu Fearn last year and I’ve seen what has happened to SAFCO Foam since he started sponsoring things at Stafford.  There’s so many people who see Stafford on FloRacing and there’s so many people who come to the track and they‘re all very supportive of those who support the racing industry.  I always hear Ben Dodge announcing the contingency sponsors and lots of times the winning drivers mention the contingency sponsors and we want to get Riley Generators’ name in people’s heads whenever they think of generators.  If things work out for us and the business continues to grow, I’d like to do something like sponsor an extra distance Limited Late Model feature or something like that.”

Riley Generators began sponsoring Jeremy Lavoie last season and they will once again have their name displayed on Lavoie’s #6 car for the 2022 season.  It was Riley’s connection to Lavoie and his family that led to him becoming a Limited Late Model sponsor.

“We’ve been a sponsor on Jeremy’s car for a couple years now and that led me to looking into what it would cost to get a billboard on the backstretch as well as the contingency program,” said Riley.  “I go way back to the Riverside Park days where I raced enduros and I’ve raced Sportsman cars at Monadnock as well as having Darrell Keane drive my car and that’s how I first met Jeremy’s family.  We love watching Jeremy race and my son Marek is Jeremy’s number one fan.  For his birthday he wanted a racecar cake and he got a car that looks just like Jeremy’s car on the cake and whenever he plays computer games like NASCAR Heat, he has to create a Jeremy Lavoie car.  It was pretty cool that the couple times that Jeremy was on the podium this past season he always gave Marek a shout out in victory lane.”

Lavoie’s #6 Limited Late Model won’t be the only car that Riley will be rooting on to victory lane this season.  Riley’s son Marek is set to debut this season on Monday nights driving a Tiger Cub kart in the Wild Thing Kart Series.  Riley is looking forward to cheering his son to victory lane and putting together a kart that will resemble Lavoie’s Limited Late Model car.

“I’m excited and Mom is nervous, but Marek talks about it every day as much as he can,” said Riley.  “He’s always asking me ‘Dad when can we get started racing?’ and my answer is always ‘Not soon enough.’  We’re going to look into the possibility of getting the number 6 so we can match Jeremy and if we can’t get 6 then we’ll try to get 66 and we’ll have the kart looking like Jeremy’s car.  I never had much talent behind the wheel but Marek seems like no matter what he gets into, he tears it up and owns the thing, so hopefully in our gene pool driving talent skipped over me and went to him.”

World Wide Technology Raceway, the home of NASCAR, INDYCAR and NHRA racing in the St. Louis-Metro East region, will host seven Midnight Madness events over the 2022 season. Midnight Madness is the safer alternative to illegal street racing. The first event will take place on March 18.

Each Ranken Technical College Presents Midnight Madness fueled by NOS Energy Drink event is open to any licensed driver and street-legal car or motorcycle. Participants are invited to race their daily drivers on the same track – an NHRA-sanctioned quart-mile drag strip – used by professional drag racers at speeds more than 330 miles per hour at WWTR’s NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Midwest Nationals. (Think of it as being allowed to play pick-up softball in Busch Stadium.)

All drivers and riders must have proof of insurance. Each vehicle must pass a safety inspection before it is allowed to race down the drag strip.

All Ranken Technical College Presents Midnight Madness fueled by NOS Energy Drink events are held on Friday nights and feature drifting, DJs, t-shirt tosses and midway attractions.

Midnight Madness dates for 2022: March 18, April 8, May 20, July 1, August 12, September 16 and October 21.

The Final Appeal Officer today heard and considered an appeal of a penalty issued on Nov. 22 to Mike Harmon and Ryan Bell in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

The penalty concerns the following section in the 2021 NASCAR Rule Book: Section 5.1.a.c.d: Vehicle Testing.

Upon hearing the testimony, the decisions of the Final Appeal Officer are:

  1. That the Appellants violated the Rules set forth in the Penalty Notice.
  2. That the decision of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel upholding the original Penalty that was issued by NASCAR was incorrect in light of the NASCAR Rulebook modification made on January 24, 2022. This Rulebook change allowed the penalty elements to be applied on an and/or basis and based upon that the Penalty has been modified to be a loss of 75 NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship Team Owner and Driver points. The suspension and monetary fine elements have been rescinded.

The Final Appeal Officer for this hearing was Mr. Roger Werner.

The decision of the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer is final and binding on all parties.

Alpha Prime Racing announced that Josh Bilicki will join the organization’s NASCAR Xfinity Series driver lineup for select starts in 2022 as the team competes with two full-time entries.

Bilicki, 26, is no stranger to speed – having over 21 years of experience across many different series. Josh ignited his passion for racing at the age of four at Badger Kart Club in Dousman, WI. Since then, he has competed in all three NASCAR series and made his Xfinity Series debut at Road America in 2016.

The Wisconsin native has an impressive list of racing achievements earned throughout his career especially at road courses. He will be competing in four of the six road course events as well as two ovals in the No. 44 Chevrolet Camaro for Alpha Prime Racing. Bilicki is also hoping to crossover the skills gained into his 2022 NASCAR Cup Series program.

“I’m incredibly excited to join Alpha Prime Racing for multiple races throughout the 2022 season, as I truly believe this will compliment my Cup program with Spire Motorsports.  I’ve always looked forward to racing the road courses in the NASCAR Xfinity Series because I truly believe that we can score an upset win, much like Jeremy Clements in 2017 at Road America,” said Bilicki. “In addition to the road courses, we have several ovals on our schedule at some of my favorite tracks.”
