The Havasu 95 Speedway will open its spectator gates this Saturday, January 21st, for the latest round of their winter racing season. The ASA sanctioned quarter mile paved oval, located within the Sara Park complex in Lake Havasu City-Arizona, will present action from the Gene Price Motorsports Late Model River Series, the Gene Price Motorsports I Love Legends Series, the Sam Nichols Electrical Inc Bandoleros, the Factory Stocks and the Goose Janitorial Supply Team Factory Stocks.
Because of chilly evening temperatures in the Lake Havasu City vicinity, next Saturday’s racing will be a daytime event. The spectator gates will open at 12 noon with the racing beginning at 2 pm. The evening of ASA racing is being sponsored by Mad Dog Radio.
Sponsored by the famed high performance racing parts, and race car fabrication, shop in nearby Quartzsite-Arizona, the Gene Price Motorsports Late Model River Series is a special points championship based on events held at the Havasu 95 Speedway and the Lucas Oil I-10 Speedway located in Blythe-California. This Saturday will be the fifth of eight scheduled events.
Blythe late model driver Mike Sutterfield continues to dominate the series’ points standings. His 198 accumulated points are based on three consecutive wins followed by a second place finish. He now holds a 26 point advantage over Rob Munoz. The real points battle in this division appears to be between Munoz, (172 points), David Forrester, (166) and Greg Leith, (164). With only eight points separating the drivers in second through fourth, their personal points battle could get very exciting.
The Gene Price Motorsports I Love Legends Series will be making their fourth appearance at the Havasu 95 Speedway on Saturday. Their series employs a similar format as the Gene Price Late Model Series. These very fast cars resemble scale models of roadsters, from the 1930’s and ’40’s era, and literally fly around the track.
Dustin Ash leads the current standings with 192 points based on a pair of feature wins. Kyle Niquette is second in the standings, with 178 points, followed by Robert D’Ambra with 170 points.
The youngsters in their small, but very fast, Bandolero cars will be making their fourth appearance of the winter racing season this Saturday in the Sam Nichols Electrical Inc Bandolero Series. Ricky Lewis has been on fire, during the first three events of the year, and leads the standings with 198 points based on two feature wins and a second place finish. However the real points battle here is between Michelle Brachowski and Matthew Davey who are only separated by two points in the standings.
It’s hard to imagine an evening at the Havasu 95 Speedway without the presence of the their famed Factory Stocks. It’s one of the major reasons why the grandstands are always packed at the local speedway. The racing is rubbing gang will be making their seventh appearance of the season this Saturday.
Chris Weiss, a two time feature winner this season, leads the championship standings with 266 points and holds a 26 points advantage over Chris Blackwell in second. But making things interesting here are drivers Cole Loftslard, with a feature win, and former series champion William Guevara who are tied for third, with 224 points, in the standings.
This same division will be, once again, making a second appearance on the track with the Goose Janitorial Supply Team Factory Stocks. This concept features one car with a rotating team of three drivers, with at least one of them having to be female, competing in a completely separate points championship from the regular Factory Stocks.
Team Shake and Bake, based on three feature wins by Chris Weiss along with team mate Nathan Hovdal, leads the standings with 288 points. However that’s only a ten point lead over Team Monte Carlo comprised of feature winner Larry Gerchman along with Sandy and Mike Price. The Intimidators, featuring the driving trio of William Guevara, Breanna Nelson and Lisa Snell, are third in the standings and only 12 markers from the top.
The Havasu 95 Speedway racing weekend actually begins on Friday night, January 20th, with a test and tune session for all of the racing divisions from 6 to 9 pm. This practice session is free to spectators. On Saturday, Mad Dog Radio race day, the gates will, again, open at noon with racing at 2 pm.
Saturday general admission tickets are $12. Tickets for seniors, 55 plus, the military and the handicapped are $10. Kids tickets, ages six to 16, are $6 while kids five and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paid adult. Lake Havasu Unified School District students can receive a one dollar discount by presenting their school ID card. The speedway also offers a value family package, for $25, which admits two adults and two kids. Racing fans can also enjoy the special amenities of the speedway’s VIP section,for $25, which features the best seats in the house.
