Kvapil Looking for Third-Straight Top 20

Travis Kvapil, driver of the No. 93 Burger King/Dr Pepper Toyota, scored a 16th-place finish last week at Daytona. Not only did his performance tie his best finish of 2012, but it was also the first time that a BK Racing team earned two consecutive top 20s. Can Kvapil make it three in a row this weekend in New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s Lenox Industrial Tools 301?

Kvapil averages a 21st-place finish in his 2012 performances at one-mile venues. Kvapil finished 19th at Phoenix. He was involved in a wreck at Dover, yet rallied to a 23rd-place run.

Kvapil has made eight Sprint Cup Series starts at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. His best finish is 16th place, which he captured in 2008. In Truck Series competition, he has six starts. He achieved a win in 2004 and all but one performance resulted in a top 10.

“Loudon is a flat, one-mile oval. It’s hard to pass there. You’ve got to take care of your brakes, your rear-end gear and things like that. I’m looking forward to it. It’s short-track racing. I usually have a good feel for what I need when I go to a place like Loudon. We had a great run at Phoenix, so we’ll take what we learned there and apply it. We’ll take what we’ve learned since then and apply it and have a really good run this weekend.

“From where this team started on February 1 to where we’re at now, we’ve made some big strides for sure. Early in the year, we were just trying to get to the race track. When a car would come back from the race track, we’d rob pieces and parts off of it and put it on the next car. We were just showing up. We weren’t as prepared as we could have been. We’re still not where we want to be, but we’ve made a ton of progress. We’ve seen some good runs peeking through here and there. Landon (Cassill) has had some top-20 finishes. We’ve had a couple with our 93 team. We just need to be a little more consistent. Now that we’re going to tracks for a second time, hopefully our performance will pick up. We’ll have a little bit of a notebook to look back on, so it won’t be such a fresh start. Everything’s been brand new to us so far. I’ve had to work with a new crew chief and we’ve had to get an understanding for what we both want in a car. Going back to tracks for a second time should have us running better than just starting fresh like we did in February.

“Last week showed how far we’ve come. It was the first time that we’ve had two straight top-20 finishes. It also matched our best finish of the season. It’s nice to see the Burger King/Dr Pepper team’s hard work paying off. We’re getting more consistent and more competitive as the season progresses. We’ve still got a way to go, but we’re definitely on the right track.”
