Martin Truex Jr. got collected in a multicar wreck early in the first practice session Friday at Daytona International Speedway. Truex’s No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet suffered major damage to both sides of the car, forcing the team to pull out the backup car for Sunday night’s Coke Zero 400 Sprint Cup Series race at the 2.5-mile oval.
The No. 78 backup Chevrolet was the team’s superspeedway car in 2014. It last competed in October at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
“Everything happened so quickly,” said Truex. “Cars were starting to check up and I then saw the 18 (Kyle Busch) starting to get sideways. I hit the brakes to try to slow down but for some reason our car just went straight into the wall. We have a lot of damage and will be going to a backup car. We’ll be fine.”
