First Step In South Boston Speedway Repaving Begins This Week

South Boston Speedway is quiet but not for long. Work on the first repaving of the .4-mile oval since 1993 will begin this week.

It’s another phase of a three-year, $1 million capital improvement plan for the facility which began last spring with the installation of new grandstand seating.

The first step in the repaving process will begin Wednesday when the “milling” process begins to grind and remove the top two inches of old asphalt. The ground-up asphalt will be repurposed to reinforce the parking area and roads into the pits.

The milling process should take about two days to complete.

The actual paving of the track should begin the week of October 10. The paving will take about two days to complete.

The capital improvement plan will continue over the next two years with the lighting and sound system being upgraded along with scoreboard updates and the addition of fan amenities and conveniences, which will include a kids’ playground.
