Whelen Night sending Kingsport Speedway into Final Four Races of the Season

After taking last weekend off for summer break, Kingsport Speedway roars back to life this Friday, July 25 with Whelen Night at the Races.

Only four points-paying races remain this season and championships remain undecided and way too close to call.

In the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car ranks, Kres VanDyke and Zeke Shell are tied with 358 points each for the top spot. VanDyke currently holds the lead by having seven wins to Shell’s three victories. Ronnie McCarty trails by just four points in third, while Wayne Hale lurks only five points behind in fourth place.

The Street Stock division is just as close, with Chris Tunnell leading Paul Shull by three points. Dennis Deese holds in third, 21 points behind Tunnell.

Billy Byington has a division-high seven wins on the season, but the champion isn’t ready to be signed over just yet. John Ketron sits in the second place, 24 points behind Byington.

A minor 29 points separates first through fourth positions in the Mod 4 division. Kevin Canter currently holds the lead over Jerry Miller, Chris Amburgey and Dennis Arnold, respectively.

The Pure Street championship battle has essentially become a two-man battle. Marty Tunnell leads over Dennis Arnold by 16 points. Duke Bare is the next closest to Tunnell and Arnold, behind 175 points.

A full card of racing is set for Friday night. 60 laps of action in the Late Model Stock Car division is the night’s feature race. Street Stock, Pure 4, Mod 4, Pure Street and Legend Cars will also do battle.

Friday’s race also honors first responders from all across the region. First responders will receive recognition during pre-race festivities and a special parade lap of first responder vehicles is also scheduled.

“Whelen is in the industry leader in warning lights and systems that we see every day on the vehicles of first responders,” said Karen Tunnell, Kingsport Speedway general manager. “That makes this Friday the perfect night to honor the brave men and women that work as first responders to help and to keep us safe.”

Grandstand gates open at 5:30 p.m., qualifying begins at 7 p.m., pre-race festivities are at 7:30 p.m. and racing gets underway at 8 p.m. Adult admission is $10 and children 12-and-under are admitted free. Tier parking is available in turns three and four at $10 per vehicle plus admission.
