Benson Collects Late Model Win At Dillon

Randy Benson of Rockingham, N.C., ended recent struggles and captured his first late model victory of the year Saturday night at Dillon Motor Speedway.

Benson, the 2014 track champion, had suffered a rash of recent bad luck, including a crash during the track’s season opener in March. Benson captured $1,200 for outrunning the 16-car field.

Rookie driver A.J. Walsh, who captured his career best late model finish with a third place last week, continued his development with an impressive second place finish behind Benson. Averitt Lucas, Justin Hicks and Archie Adams Jr. rounded out the top five.

The late model super trucks took to the track for the first time in 2015, and it was a new winner with a familiar last name. Hayes Goodson of Darlington, son of past late model truck champion Hal Goodson, picked up where his father left off last year, taking the checkered. Jake Vuncannon, Kevin Parsons, Gene Kepley and Clay Thomas completed the top five finishers.

Jeff Melton took a break from street stock racing and entered his popular Ford Mustang in the charger class this week, winning his first race of 2016 at Dillon. Kevin Ellis, Matt Roghers, Neal Anderson and Michael Covington finished second through fifth.

Jimmy Crigger captured his first career Dillon win in the pro-4 class. Tyler McDonald finished second, Chris Hetu third and Bobby Tumbleston fourth.

Steve Chauncey won the mini-cup season opener. Karen Melton put up an impressive second-place finish. Aiden Hetu was third, Joseph Bryant fourth and Tony Leviner fifth.
