Joey Throckmorton’s competitors now have even more reason to beat him in South Boston Speedway’s Limited Sportsman Division. And he has more reason to win.
Track officials announced Wednesday that they had placed a $100 bounty on Throckmorton, who has won each of the five Limited races at South Boston this year. Each time Throckmorton wins, that amount increases by $100.
If Throckmorton elects to start at the rear of the field and wins the race, he will collect the bounty.
Throckmorton admits being a marked man is a bit of an honor.
“I like the whole bounty thing. It shows people think you are doing pretty good,” said Throckmorton. “But it gives everybody else a little extra incentive.”
And what about moving to the rear to collect the bounty himself?
“It would have to get way on up there around $500 before I went for it,” he said. “It would have to be worth my while.”
Throckmorton said he and his team are savoring the win streak, but at the same time, he knows it could be over in a heartbeat.
We’re definitely enjoying it, but we could go this week and not win or not win another race this year. That’s how competitive South Boston is. Winning is certainly way more fun than losing. We know if we start being cocky or stop working on stuff like we should, we’ll be in trouble.”
Throckmorton will be fending off the bounty hunters Saturday night in a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race at South Boston. Also on the schedule are twin 75-lap races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Models, a 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock Division race, twin 25-lap races for the Modified Division and a 15-lap Budweiser Hornets Division race.
Grandstand gates open at 5:30 p.m., qualifying starts at 6 p.m. and the first race gets the green flag at 7 p.m.
Adult general admission tickets are $10 each, with youth ages 7-12 admitted for $5 and kids ages six and under admitted free with a paying adult.
