Five straight for Pulliam in 200-lap race at South Boston Speedway

Lee Pulliam is finding himself quite a niche in South Boston Speedway’s biggest race of the season, and the Alton, Virginia resident found the Mother Lode once again Saturday night, winning the Bojangles Presents Dr. & Mrs. Maresca of St. Lawrence Radiology and Thunder Road Harley Davidson NASCAR Late Model 200.

The win, Pulliam’s eighth of the year at South Boston Speedway, was his fifth straight in the biggest race of the season and gave him wins in the first two of three races for the Virginia Late Model Triple Crown.

The win also allowed Pulliam to draw closer to Ridgeway, Virginia driver Matt Bowling in the Late Model Stock Car points standings.

Bowling won his fourth pole of the season with a time of 15.876 seconds (90.703 MPH) and led each of the first 100 laps, with a seven-car inversion at the halfway mark putting South Boston, Virginia driver Austin Thaxton on the inside pole for the second 100 laps.

Hampton, Virginia, driver Nick Smith took the lead from Thaxton on lap 121, but Bowling took the lead again on lap 130 and held it through two caution periods, the final one a red flag stoppage before Pulliam passed for the lead on lap 162.

Pulliam pulled away to a 1.577-second win over Bowling, with Smith finishing third.

Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, North Carolina, and Matt Waltz of Newport News, Virginia, rounded out the top-five finishers in a field of 19 cars.

Only six finished on the lead lap in a race that had eight cautions, including the red flag stoppage for rear end grease on the track.

 

Trey Crews captures win in 100-lap Limited Sportsman race

It will come down to the final race of the season to determine the Limited Sportsman Division championship after a win by Trey Crews in the 100-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

The win was Crews’ second in a row and his fourth of the season.

Crews of Halifax, started third on the grid and passed points leader Danny Willis Jr. on lap 24 before setting his sights on pole sitter Joey Throckmorton of South Boston.

Crews bolted past Throckmorton on the outside on the restart following the race’s first caution on lap 38 and led the rest of the way, winning by a 1.676-second margin over Mike Jones of Halifax.

Tommy Peregoy of Clarksville finished in third place, followed by Willis, of Cluster Springs, with Calvin Meadows of Martinsville, Virginia rounding out the top-five finishers in a race that had two cautions.

Throckmorton’s pole-qualifying time was 16.194 seconds (88.922 MPH).

 

Late pass gives Stuart Crews win in 50-lap Pure Stock race

Stuart Crews won his second straight 50-lap Budweiser Pure Stock Division race after starting at the rear of the field.

Crews started in 11^th position after missing his qualifying start but steadily made his way through the field to catch pole sitter and points leader Greg Autry.

Autry, of South Boston qualified on the pole with a time of 18.351 seconds (78.470 MPH), and led the first 43 laps of the race before the fourth caution of the race bunched the field together.

Crews started on the outside pole on the restart and made contact with Autry in turn three before pushing past him for the lead.

Crews finished with a 1.091-second margin over Autry for his fourth win of the season, with D.J. Moser of South Boston, Johnny Layne of Nathalie and Colin Garrett of South Boston rounding out the top-five finishers in a race that had four cautions.

 

Garnett wins Hornets race

Todd Garnett won his second race of the season Saturday night in the 15-lap race for the Hornets Division race.  Garnett, of Drakes Branch, Virginia, led every lap of the race, which had to restart after three cars got together on the opening lap.

Kaitlinn Simmons of South Hill, Virginia finished second, with points leader Eric Winslow of Pelham, North Carolina rounding out the top-three finishers in a race that had two cautions.

 

Heuer wins Champ Kart race

Tillman Heuer took the lead from pole sitter Teddy Burris on lap six and led the rest of the way to win the 20-lap Champs Karts race, his first career victory in the series.

Charlie Ray Lorah finished second, with Aaron Leach finishing third and Burris fourth in a race that ran caution free.

 

Next Race At South Boston Speedway

NASCAR racing will return to South Boston Speedway on Saturday, September 5, for the 7 p.m. running of the GCR Presents Spaulding Equipment Co. NASCAR Late Model Twin 75’s racing program.

All five of South Boston Speedway’s racing divisions will be featured, with twin 75-lap races for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division headlining the night’s action.

The Limited Sportsman Division drivers and the competitors in the Modified Division will be featured in 50-lap races, with the Budweiser Pure Stock Division competitors doing battle in a 30-lap race and the competitors in the Budweiser Hornets Division taking the track for a 15-lap race.

It will be Championship Night for the competitors in the Limited Sportsman, Modified, Pure Stock and Hornets Division this event will be the final night of racing for the four divisions at South Boston Speedway this season.

Registration and pit gates will open at 2 p.m., with practice going from 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:30 p.m. The first of the night’s six races will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

Adult admission is $10, with kids ages six and under admitted free.
