Cole Anderson Finishes Tenth in Southern Super Series Finale

For the second time in as many weeks, Cole Anderson unloaded a fast Timberwolf Plastics Chevrolet at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola on Saturday night for the Deep South Cranes 150, the final Southern Super Series event of the year. The youngster qualified fourth fastest and ran with the leaders most of the race until handling issues relegated him to a tenth place finish.

The No. 97 crew gave Cole a top-six car in both practice sessions on Saturday afternoon, instilling confidence after last week’s pro late model race that the Minnesota native would once again be a force to compete against for the win on Saturday night. After qualifying in fourth, Anderson was ready to do work for 150 laps in what was also the final Blizzard Series race of the year.

Upon the drop of the green flag, Anderson started to ride at his own pace, working his way slowly forward using the outside groove of the racetrack to make his moves. However, despite his patience, the heat and the abrasive nature of Pensacola’s asphalt soon began to take its toll on the tires his car. As the race wore on, the car freed up more and more beyond Cole’s liking, causing him to backslide to the tenth spot at the checkered flag, the final car on the lead lap.

“In our first run of the day, we were just slipping and sliding all over because the track was so hot,” Anderson said after the race, noting that the team was prepared for the track conditions. “We started out pretty good, working our way up on the high side but started to get too free. Even though the track will be different in December, I think it was a good test for us. We’ll take it back to the shop and work on it and be better for the Derby.”

This was the final super late model race at 5 Flags Speedway until the prestigious Snowball Derby in December. Prior to that event, Cole and the team will be testing again in Pensacola to dial their machine in even closer to what is needed to succeed in that race.

Anderson and the ACR crew will travel north in two weeks for their next race, the four-day extravaganza known as Oktoberfest at Lacrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in Wisconsin. Over the course of the event, they will have the opportunity to race four times across four days in what has become a larger-than-life season-ending event that features various super late model races and concludes with an ARCA Midwest Tour race on Sunday, October 9.
