CMS 03 Superboat Unlimited Wins Marathon Super Boat Grand Prix

After a six-year hiatus, Super Boat International has returned to Marathon, Florida for the first time since 2009, bringing island natives and race-goers together once again for a spectacular boating event.

CMS 03 Offshore Race Team dazzled spectators and earned 1st place in the Superboat Unlimited class race, averaging 98.75 mph during the event. With throttleman, John Tomlinson, and driver, Jeff Harris, in charge, the team sped to victory with its signature black & orange, 48’ MTI catamaran. “Overall, it was a fun race on a tight little course,” Tomlinson commented.

Fans had a front row seat at a rare opportunity of seeing nearly identical boats and paint schemes compete in the same class during an offshore racing event. CMS Motorsports team owner, Bob Bull, and Randy Scism, owner of MTI, drove the NO. 3 CMS 52’ catamaran in the Superboat Unlimited class, and took second place behind their teammates.

“After blowing the water hose, we didn’t want to push our luck,” Scism, from the CMS camp, said. “We decided it was best to exit the race after lap 17 to avoid further damage to the boat.”

The race community was overcome with excitement, as the crowds could be heard cheering miles away from their perch at the Marathon Sunset Park, located at the base of Marathon’s famous Seven Mile Bridge. Fans could also be heard from the newly renovated Flaro Blanco Resort during this beautiful Fourth of July weekend. With celebrations happening all around, including the phenomenal firework show on Sombrero Beach organized by Course Marshall Randy Mearns, it was hard NOT to have fun at this Super Boat race!

Another team to place first during the day’s events was Team Amsoil. Throttled by team owner, Bob Teague, and driven by team member, Paul Whittier, Team Amsoil averaged 95.06 mph during the Superboat class race, racking in 543 points in the event.

Amsoil’s 36-foot Skater, powered by twin 750-hp Teague Custom Marine engines, showcased its dominance in the event. “It was a long race, almost 80 miles,” said Teague, “The boat ran great, the competition was good and the crew at SBI did an excellent job. Overall it was a great event.”

Fitting for a 4th of July win, decked out in a red, white and blue boat and matching uniforms, Team 2nd Amendment (Manufacturer P3 Class) gave fans something to proudly cheer about along with their support for our great country.

Other class winners included; 1 Hooters Instigator (Superboat Extreme), 51 Sun Print (Superboat Vee), S-19 Frank & Jimmy’s Propeller (Superboat Stock) and P4-1 Two Cruel (Manufacturer P4).
