Second Place Finish for Gar Robinson at Sebring - Speedway Digest

After many hours of torrential rain and a gloomy weather outlook for Sunday’s race, the season opener for the Trans Am Series boasted a record-setting 69-car field, with rookie Gar Robinson of Robinson Racing earning second place in the TA2 Class, under clear skies and with typical Florida heat. Starting in 11th place in the Foametix Trans Am 100 held at Sebring International Raceway, 20-year-old Gar charged steadily through the turbulent field, making aggressive moves against Mustangs and Challengers, in the No. 74 Chevrolet Camaro sponsored by 74 Ranch Resort.

“The car was manageable all weekend. I made the car last in the end. I just kept picking them off one by one, until I got to second,” said Robinson. “We’ll be contenders at the end of the year for sure.”

“I’m thankful for all the support behind me from my dad and for how my team solves problems,” noted Robinson. “We came together fairly well as a team, making progress throughout the weekend; it showed on the race track and in how we performed when we all work together. We all get along which you don’t find too commonly in racing.”

Driving Robinson Racing’s No. 72 Chevrolet Camaro sponsored by 74 Ranch Resort, rookie Shane Lewis began the day in fourth place but lost power in the first lap due to a faulty plug wire. Repairs were done during full-course caution laps, and Lewis fell to the back of the pack, yet still on the lead lap. After a green flag restart and several more cautions, Lewis continued to advance and battle through the field. Lewis stayed focused, gaining momentum, and ultimately finishing in the seventh position in the TA2 Class.

“I now have my first Trans Am race under my belt, and I am so happy to be running all season,” said Lewis. “This series is so much fun, and I have the best teammate and crew you could imagine. You have no idea what a talent Gar really is. I am so incredibly proud of him.”

The Foametix Trans Am 100 at Sebring International Raceway, held on Sunday, March 1, 2015, set an all-time record for Trans Am entries in a single race at 69, while 73 cars participated in sessions throughout the weekend. Fans can catch all the action from the race weekend at Sebring on CBS Sports Network on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Next up on the schedule is the Homestead-Miami Speedway on April 12, 2015, for Round 2 of the Trans Am Championship.
